The barbell is a versatile piece of workout equipment. Barbells are a straight metal bar that weighted plates can be added to increase the resistance.
Also, barbells are one of the most used pieces of equipment in the gym, with many people using it for workouts every single day. Similarly, I can say I do not go one day without using the barbell in a workout.
A barbell can be combined with other equipment as well. In an earlier post, I go through landmine exercises that also utilize the barbell. Check that post out here.
Barbell Sizes
Barbells come in different sizes or weights. The most common size is 5-6 feet long and between 35-45 pounds. The smaller sized bars are usually considered the women’s Olympic size and the larger being the men’s.
Benefits of Barbell Exercises
- Changeable resistance: you can increase or decrease the resistance depending on your strength level.
- Different Exercises: can perform many different exercises (even though I only list some).
- Increase strength and power throughout your body using a barbell. Upper and lower body exercises can be completed with barbells
Other Bars
There is another type of bar that I also use called the curl bar. I got this bar for my husband for Christmas as he had been asking for one for several months.
This bar does not have a straight bar but instead a waved bar to allow for different hand positions. The curl bar is similar in that you can add weights to each side to increase resistance.
Exercises
Bicep curls
Tricep extension
Shoulder press
Bench press
Bent over row
Squats front or back
Deadlifts
Hip thrusts
Whereas the barbell is a versatile piece of workout equipment, the ones I list in this post are my favorites. And a typical workout would include 3 sets of 10 repetitions with changing resistance depending on your fitness level.
