Mental Health

Let’s get a little more real about something: mental health. This month celebrated World Mental Health Day.

I am going to be honest with everyone. A few years ago, I was not doing well. I was not loving my job anymore. I tried being present for my family, but it was not working well. After a long talk with my husband, I decided to leave that job and start working for a different company for less hours and more time to figure out what I wanted.

I am a firm believer (at least I am now), that your mental health should be just as important as physical health. Along with working out your body, you need to work out mentally. And in the case of mental health, I believe it is the opposite of working out: taking a break.

Taking care of yourself mentally can have many different forms. Some people will consider working out as their mental health time, others it might be reading, or even watching a movie.

The World Health Organization defines mental health as: a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn and work well, and contribute to their community. To learn more about what they have to say about mental health check out the website here.

Things you can try:

  • Going for a walk: walking is healthy, but it will also allow you to clear your mind.
  • Having time to yourself: this is one of my go-to’s.
  • Meditation: whether first thing in the morning or before bed, meditation helps me to clear my mind and get a good night sleep. (find out more about meditation on my blog post here)
  • Therapy: psychological services are nothing to be ashamed of. Speaking with someone about your struggles can help you tremendously.

There are obviously so many other things you can do but these are ones I do.

Having time to myself is the big thing I do for myself. I make a point to get out of the house for a couple hours every week to do something that is not work-related, or family centered.

During those hours, I get to focus on myself. Some may think that is self-centered, but just because I am a wife and mother, and have a full-time job, does not mean I should not focus on me every now and then.

Everyone needs time to recharge. If I do not get that time, then I do not feel I am at my best for my family or at work. Shout out to my husband for making sure I get that time to myself.

Please also remember, mental health conditions can range from mild to severe. I recommend getting professional help for yourself as a place to start.
